Create a Sense of Classroom Community
Help Students Work at their Optimal Level of Challenge
Teaching so that Students can Learn Holistically

Classroom Community can be created through cooperative learning, social community and technology. Not only does the physical classroom need to meet the needs of the students we also need to create a social community. Many instructors are turning to technology. Facebook, texting and messaging were once banned in classrooms, but they are beginning to be utilized by instructors to create a community.
Help Students Work at their Optimal Level of Challenge
Students need to be challenged and feel that they can meet and excel on the projects and assignments given to them. This will lower the anxiety in the students and increase their motivation to learn.
Teaching so that Students can Learn Holistically
The brain and body need to meet with the new knowledge. The ideas need to be understood and cared about then acted upon to become successful.

    Student Engagement
We all want our students to become as passionate about learning as they are about beer pong. If we can engage some of that displayed enthusiasm within the classroom we would foster the future. Motivational and active learning components are required elements of student engagement. If one is missing the learning will be forced or absent.

These ten steps are from an article that slightly focused on children, but the concepts and ideas are adaptable to the adult environment. I found myself relating to the ideas and seeing how they can be used in various classroom settings.
    Create an Emotionally Safe Classroom
    ...
When your students ask, "Why do we need to know this?" you must be ready with the best answer possible. Great projects incorporate authentic tasks that will help students in their lives, jobs, or relationships. Engage students by developing an inventory of big ideas to help you make the connections between your assignments and important life skills, expertise, high-quality work, and craftsmanship. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills provides a good starter list.
Also, search out the powerful processes and ideas experts in your own subject use repeatedly. (In math, for instance, my list includes generalizing and parts and wholes.) Keep a journal of the big ideas you've discovered simply by teaching your subject. By continually referring to these big ideas, you will encourage students to think and act like subject-matter experts and develop skills they will use throughout their lives.
